Banksman and Slinger Signaller Training: A Career-Boosting Qualification
Banksman and slinger signaller roles are essential in any operation involving cranes, hoists, and heavy lifting equipment. The qualification is relatively quick to obtain and opens doors to higher-paid work in construction, logistics, manufacturing, and ports.
What Does a Banksman Do?
A banksman guides vehicle and crane movements using hand signals or radio communication. They are responsible for:
- Directing vehicles in areas with limited visibility — reversing lorries into loading bays, guiding forklifts in tight spaces
- Signalling to crane operators during lifting operations
- Ensuring the area is clear of people before movements begin
- Communicating with drivers and operators when they cannot see their surroundings
What Does a Slinger Signaller Do?
A slinger signaller combines banksman duties with the skill of attaching (slinging) loads to cranes and hoists:
- Selecting the correct lifting equipment — chains, slings, shackles, and spreader beams
- Inspecting lifting gear before use and rejecting defective equipment
- Attaching loads securely using approved slinging methods
- Calculating load weights and checking they are within the crane's safe working load
- Signalling to the crane operator throughout the lift
- Guiding the load to its landing position and detaching safely
Training and Certification
There are two main certification routes:
- CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) — the standard for construction sites. A Red CPCS card requires completing a training course and technical test. A Blue CPCS card (the full qualification) additionally requires an NVQ
- NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) — an alternative certification accepted on many sites
Training courses typically last:
- Banksman only — 1-2 days, costing £250-£400
- Slinger signaller — 3-5 days, costing £500-£800
- Combined banksman/slinger — 5 days, costing £600-£900
Career Benefits and Pay
- Banksmen/slinger signallers typically earn £14-18/hour through agencies
- The qualification is in demand across construction, logistics, manufacturing, and port operations
- It pairs well with forklift and crane operator qualifications for maximum versatility
- Many sites require a qualified banksman/signaller for every crane operation — making you essential to operations
- It is a stepping stone toward crane operator training
