CSCS Card Guide: Crossing Over from Warehouse to Construction Work

If you work in warehousing or industrial roles, adding a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card to your toolkit can significantly expand your job options. Many construction sites need labourers, logistics operatives, and forklift drivers — and a CSCS card is your ticket in.

    What Is a CSCS Card?

The CSCS card proves that you have the right training and qualifications for the type of construction work you do. Most construction sites in the UK require every worker to hold a valid CSCS card before they are allowed on site. It is the construction equivalent of the forklift licence in warehousing.

    Types of CSCS Cards

    • Green card (Labourer) — the entry-level card. Requires passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. Valid for 5 years
    • Blue card (Skilled Worker) — for those with an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in a construction trade
    • Gold card (Advanced Craft/Supervisor) — NVQ Level 3 or supervisory qualification
    • Black card (Manager) — for those with management-level qualifications
    • Red card (Trainee/Apprentice) — for those working toward a qualification

Most people crossing over from warehouse work will start with the Green Labourer card.

How to Get Your Green CSCS Card

    1. Book the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test — this is a 50-question multiple-choice test. It costs £22.50 and can be booked at Pearson VUE test centres nationwide
    2. Study for the test — the official CITB revision materials are available as a book (around £15) or app. Most people need 2-4 weeks of study
    3. Pass the test — you need at least 47 out of 50 correct answers
    4. Apply for the card — once you pass, apply online at cscs.uk.com. The card costs £36
    5. Total cost — approximately £70-75 including the test, revision materials, and card

    Why It Is Worth Having

    • Access to construction labouring work, which typically pays £13-16/hour through agencies
    • Forklift drivers with CSCS cards can work on construction sites at premium rates
    • Banksman roles on construction sites pay well and suit people with logistics experience
    • Construction logistics — managing material deliveries on major building projects — is a growing field
    • It broadens your options during quiet periods in warehouse or manufacturing work

    Skills That Transfer

Your existing warehouse and industrial experience gives you advantages on construction sites:

    • Forklift operation — construction sites need experienced FLT drivers
    • Manual handling — you already understand safe lifting techniques
    • Health and safety awareness — factory and warehouse safety principles apply on sites
    • Working at pace in physical environments — you are already conditioned for active work
    • Team working in high-pressure situations
