Free Training and Upskilling Courses for Industrial Workers in 2026
Training costs can be a barrier to career progression, but there are more free and subsidised options available than most people realise. Here is a practical guide to what is available in 2026.
Skills Bootcamps
Government-funded Skills Bootcamps offer free training in high-demand areas. Relevant courses include:
- HGV driver training (including licence acquisition)
- Forklift operator certification
- Warehouse management
- Digital skills for logistics
These are fully funded — no cost to you. Courses typically run for 8 to 16 weeks and include a guaranteed job interview on completion. Check the National Careers Service website for courses in your area.
CSCS Cards
If you want to work on construction sites, you need a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card. The process:
- Labourer's card (green): requires passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (£22.50) and applying for the card (£36)
- The test is multiple choice and can be booked at Pearson VUE centres nationwide
- Study materials are available free online or via the CITB app
- Total cost: under £60 — a small investment for access to construction work paying £12-15/hr
CPCS Cards
CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) cards certify you to operate construction plant — excavators, dumpers, cranes. Training is not free, but some employers fund it. A CPCS card significantly increases your earning potential in construction.
Employer-Funded Training
Many employers offer funded training to attract and retain workers:
- HGV licence acquisition — several major logistics firms fund C and C+E licences
- Forklift training — commonly funded by warehouse employers for reliable temps
- Driver CPC — most permanent employers cover the full cost
- First aid and fire marshal — often funded through induction programmes
At Titan Recruitment, we actively connect candidates with employers who offer funded training. Ask your consultant about current opportunities.
National Careers Service
The National Careers Service provides free careers advice and can signpost you to local training opportunities. Their helpline (0800 100 900) is available Monday to Friday, and they offer online skills assessments and CV support.
Union Learning
If your workplace has a trade union presence, ask about union learning funds. These provide subsidised courses in everything from basic literacy and numeracy to professional qualifications. Even non-union members can sometimes access these.
