Peak Season Warehouse Work: How to Prepare and Make the Most of It
Peak season is the busiest — and most lucrative — time of year for warehouse workers. For a few intense months, overtime is plentiful, pay rates rise, and agencies are desperate for reliable staff. If you play it right, peak season can boost your annual earnings significantly.
When Does Peak Season Hit?
- October to December — the main peak, driven by Black Friday and Christmas. This is the biggest by far
- Easter — a smaller peak, particularly in food distribution
- Amazon Prime Day (July) — increasingly significant for e-commerce warehouses
- Back to School (August/September) — moderate peak for certain retailers
The Christmas peak typically starts ramping up in mid-October and reaches maximum intensity from mid-November to 23rd December. January is usually very quiet — plan your finances accordingly.
What Employers Want
During peak, employers prioritise:
- Reliability — turning up on time, every shift, is the number one requirement. Warehouse managers would rather have a slower worker who shows up than a fast picker who calls in sick
- Flexibility — willingness to work overtime, weekends, and different shifts
- Speed — pick rates and packing speeds increase during peak. Previous warehouse experience is valued
- Attitude — peak is stressful. A positive, can-do attitude is noticed and remembered
Overtime and Pay
- Overtime is often available 6 or even 7 days a week during peak
- Some warehouses offer enhanced rates: 1.25x, 1.5x, or even 2x for key dates
- Agency rates may increase by £1 to £2 per hour during the busiest weeks
- Bonuses for completing the full peak period (e.g., £200–£500 attendance bonuses) are common at larger sites
How to Get Rebooked
If you want to turn a peak season role into ongoing work:
- Be the person who says yes to extra shifts
- Learn multiple areas of the warehouse — versatility is valued
- Build a rapport with the shift supervisors (they often decide who stays)
- Maintain your accuracy — speed without accuracy is worthless
- Ask your agency to flag your interest in ongoing work
Preparing Yourself
- Get your sleep schedule sorted before peak starts
- Invest in comfortable, supportive footwear — your feet will take a beating
- Meal prep to avoid relying on expensive canteen food or vending machines
- Keep your phone charged and ringer on — agencies may call at short notice with shifts
- Sort childcare or transport arrangements in advance for variable shift times
