Working in Cornwall: Job Opportunities Beyond Tourism

Cornwall is known for beaches and cream teas, but its economy extends well beyond tourism. Food manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, and construction provide year-round employment. Our St Austell branch serves the county and understands the realities of working in this unique part of the UK.

    Food and Drink Manufacturing

Cornwall's food sector is a major employer:

    • Ginsters (Callington) — one of the largest employers in East Cornwall, producing pasties and savoury products. Regular demand for production operatives, machine operators, and warehouse staff
    • St Austell Brewery — brewing, packaging, and distribution roles
    • Trewithen Dairy — dairy processing in Lostwithiel
    • Numerous smaller food producers in fish processing, bakeries, and artisan food

    Logistics and Distribution

Cornwall's geography — a long peninsula with limited road access — means that distribution is centralised through a few key hubs:

    • Indian Queens distribution area (central Cornwall)
    • Bodmin logistics parks
    • Truro retail distribution
    • Supermarket regional distribution centres serving the county

HGV drivers are in particularly high demand in Cornwall because the distances are longer and the roads are challenging. Class 1 and 2 drivers can find consistent work.

    Renewable Energy

Cornwall is at the forefront of the UK's renewable energy sector:

    • Offshore wind farm construction and maintenance
    • Geothermal energy projects near Redruth
    • Solar farm installation and maintenance
    • Lithium mining — Cornwall has significant lithium deposits being developed

The Pay vs Cost of Living Reality

Pay in Cornwall is typically 5-15% lower than national averages. Warehouse roles pay £10.50-12/hr, driving roles £12-16/hr. However:

    • Property is more affordable than Devon or Somerset in many areas
    • Commuting distances can be shorter
    • Quality of life benefits (coast, countryside) are genuine
    • Seasonal summer work can supplement income

The key challenge is transport — public transport is limited, so having a car is almost essential for accessing industrial and logistics work. Factor this into your cost calculations.
