Bristol and the South West: Top Industries and Employers for Job Seekers

Bristol and the wider South West region is one of the most dynamic employment markets outside London. With a diverse economy spanning aerospace, logistics, food manufacturing, and technology, the region offers genuine opportunities for workers across the skills spectrum.

    Key Industries

    Aerospace and Defence

Bristol is the UK's aerospace capital. Airbus employs around 4,000 people at Filton, manufacturing wings for the A320 family. Rolls-Royce has a major engine facility at Patchway. The supply chain supports thousands more jobs in precision engineering, composites, and assembly work.

    Logistics and Distribution

The M4 and M5 corridors make the region a natural distribution hub. Major distribution centres include:

    • Amazon fulfilment centres in Bristol and Swindon
    • Royal Mail sorting offices across the region
    • Lidl and Aldi regional distribution centres at Bridgwater and Avonmouth
    • DHL, XPO Logistics, and Wincanton operations along the M5

    Food and Drink Manufacturing

The South West has a strong food manufacturing base:

    • Muller Dairy in Bridgwater
    • Allied Bakeries and Warburtons in Bristol
    • Yeo Valley in Somerset
    • Numerous cider producers, cheese makers, and artisan food brands

    Typical Pay Rates

    • Warehouse operatives: £11-13/hr (agency), with night premiums to £15
    • Forklift operators: £12.50-15/hr
    • HGV Class 2: £13-16/hr (agency), £30-38k permanent
    • HGV Class 1: £15-19/hr (agency), £38-48k permanent
    • Production operatives: £11-13/hr

    Commuting

Bristol has decent public transport by regional standards, but many warehouse and distribution centres are on industrial estates outside the city centre. Having your own transport is a significant advantage, particularly for shift workers. Car sharing schemes are common at larger sites.

Our Bristol branch at Tivoli House, Weston-super-Mare is well placed to serve job seekers across North Somerset, Bristol, and the surrounding area. Contact us to discuss opportunities in the region.
