How to Get Your HGV Class 1 Licence in the UK

An HGV Class 1 licence (category C+E) allows you to drive articulated lorries — the largest vehicles on UK roads, with a combined weight over 32 tonnes. It is the most sought-after driving qualification in the logistics industry: Class 1 drivers consistently earn more and have the widest choice of available work.

    Eligibility Requirements

Before you begin, you must meet these criteria:

    • Be at least 18 years old (21 for some insurance purposes)
    • Hold a full UK car licence (category B)
    • Already hold a category C licence (Class 2 / rigid) — you cannot skip straight to C+E
    • Pass a DVSA medical examination (D4 form)

Step 1: The D4 Medical Examination

Book a D4 medical with your GP or an approved clinic. The examination covers eyesight, blood pressure, heart health, diabetes screening, and neurological conditions. Expect to pay £50 to £120 depending on your surgery. The completed form is sent to the DVLA with your provisional licence application.

Step 2: Apply for Provisional Entitlement

Submit your D4 medical and D2 application form to the DVLA. Processing typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. You will receive an updated photocard licence showing provisional C+E entitlement. Do not book training until this arrives.

Step 3: Theory and Hazard Perception Tests

You must pass two theory tests before the practical:

    1. Multiple choice test — 100 questions, 85% pass mark, covering vehicle safety and regulations
    2. Hazard perception test — 19 video clips identifying developing hazards, pass mark 67 out of 100

The combined fee is £66. Most candidates need 2 to 4 weeks of preparation using official DVSA materials.

    Step 4: Practical Training

You will train at an approved centre, typically over 5 to 10 days. Training covers coupling and uncoupling, reversing exercises, road driving with a 44-tonne artic, vehicle safety checks, and manoeuvring in loading bays.

Costs vary by region. Expect £2,000 to £3,500 for a full C+E course including test fees. Some providers include accommodation.

    Step 5: The Practical Test

The DVSA practical test lasts around 90 minutes:

    • Vehicle safety walk-around check
    • Reversing an articulated vehicle within a defined area
    • Approximately 60 minutes of on-road driving including independent driving
    • Uncoupling and recoupling the trailer

Up to 15 minor faults are allowed. One serious or dangerous fault is an automatic fail. Test fee: £115 weekdays, £141 evenings/weekends.

    Total Costs

    • D4 Medical: £50–£120
    • Theory tests: £66
    • Training course: £2,000–£3,500
    • Practical test: £115
    • Total: approximately £2,200 to £3,800

    Employer-Funded Training

Due to the ongoing driver shortage, many employers now fund Class 1 training in return for a 12 to 24 month commitment. At Titan Recruitment, we connect candidates with these funded schemes, potentially saving you the entire training cost.

    After You Pass

Your full C+E entitlement is added to your licence. You will also need your Driver CPC qualification before driving professionally. With a Class 1 licence, expect starting agency rates of £14 to £18 per hour, with experienced drivers earning £20+ per hour. Permanent roles typically offer £38,000 to £45,000.
